Today’s deputies from our Eden Township Substation and AC Transit Police Services attended Code Joshua’s Autism Awareness Training facilitated by Joshua’s Gift and Draymond Green (w/ his security team and staff) at the Chase Center.

First responders from throughout the Bay Area got an opportunity to engage with families and individuals with varied forms of autism. Code Joshua training was incorporated into our annual Continued Professional Training curriculum earlier this year to empower deputies with understanding and tools on how to best support individuals on the spectrum and their families during contacts.

The more you learn, the better you serve.

In honor of Autism Awareness Month, Fremont Police is proud to announce our partnership with the non-profit organization, Joshua’s Gift (@joshuasgift7), and the shared vision of promoting acceptance, inclusion, and respect with our neurodiverse community. Together, we will be furthering Code Joshua: a two-prong mission of enhancing officer autism awareness training and the development of a voluntary registry to assist families with autistic loved ones. This registry aims to further community safety by providing law enforcement with more information, especially in times of crisis.

As we work on this public safety initiative, we will be reaching out to the community and stakeholders for input and discourse. This month, we will also proudly show off our new decal as autism community partners.

Special Autism Training

For Union City Police

UNION CITY, CA — The Union City Police Department has completed a one week training session on behaviors related to autism, and intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The Code Joshua training was held by Joshua's Gift, a Fremont-based organization that provided officers with knowledge, strategies, and tools to effectively respond to individuals living with autism and IDD.

Alameda County Sheriff’s Office

Alameda County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) personnel from around the agency, along with the Fremont Police Department, attended a special presentation on Code Joshua, a call for emergency assistance uniquely created for individuals and families living with autism, at our Regional Training Center. Code Joshua's purpose is to sensitize first responders to recognize, respond to, and safely approach individuals on the autism spectrum and other persons with intellectual developmental disabilities (IDD). The training, facilitated by Joshua's Gift , focused on identifying behaviors related to autism and IDD and establishing effective methods of communication with empathy and patience. The ACSO has partnered with Joshua's Gift to incorporate Code Joshua training into our Peace Officer Standards and Training Continuing Professional Training curriculum.
